The aircrafts warning system gives already a signal, when the handheld-stinger weapon is just pointed at the aircraft, not aimed/zoomedin/activated.
Plot: I wanted to wait until a helicopter is closer to me with the stinger. Didn't "rightclick" with stinger yet, but he, without seeing me, popped flares and went off. Happened a 2nd time aswell.
Perhaps connected with the former bug "hipfire stinger"?
